Russian Problems: 3 Big Reasons Leading to National Decline

A tightly centralized and absolutely unaccountable political system Vladimir Putin has built in the recent decade prevents any control over corruption which under his presidency and the following years reached its max according to Transparency International. Despite all Medvedev’s loud declarations of the immediate need to fight corruption, Russia slid from the 146th line to the 154th out of 178 countries, outranked by the most backward African countries.

The notorious cases of Sergei Magnitsky and Mikhail Khodokovsky are a vivid proof that things are far from being normal from the judicial, political and human rights perspectives. Nothing stands in the way of the rotten money- and power-hungry officials who are immune to any punishment. In pursiut of short-term benefits for their families and side-businesses they can afford villas in Spain and Maseratis at home. They can do no good to the country or people however.

Both the President and Prime Minister seem to have bottled out of making any big change by locking up swindling officials, firing incapable ministers or otherwise improving the situation.
