Plea to Arab League to monitor Syrian flashpoints
Plea to Arab League to monitor Syrian flashpoints
clipped from article: The opposition Syrian National Council (SNC) called Sunday for the observers to despatch without fail to Homs and other hot spots of the government's bloody crackdown on dissent.
"Since early this morning, the (Homs) neighbourhood of Baba Amr has been under a tight siege and the threat of military invasion by an estimated 4,000 soldiers," said the SNC, the main umbrella group of opponents of President Bashar al-Assad.
"The Syrian National Council demands that the Arab League observers go to Homs immediately, specifically to the besieged neighbourhoods, to fulfil their stated mission," it added in a statement.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said security forces pounded Baba Amr with mortar and heavy machinegun fire, killing an undetermined number of people and wounding 124 others.
It earlier reported one civilian killed in the city's Karm al-Zeitun district.
The Observatory said 26 people were arrested and tortured in public in nearby Rastan, and that one civilian was killed by security forces in eastern Deir Ezzor province.
It also reported five civilians shot and wounded in the capital's southern district of Sitt Zeinab.
The central city of Homs has been a focal point of the Assad government's crackdown on anti-regime demonstrations, as well as the site of fierce clashes between the army and deserters.
"Three children who had been wounded on Saturday in military and security operations in the town of Al-Quriya died," said the Observatory, noting that reports of the deaths were delayed as the town is cut off by security forces.[ read more at link]

Syrian faces 'torture and death' if deported | Canada | News | Winnipeg Sun
A petition should be picked up by Avaaz to make sure this man is safe! It would be totally insane to deport him now! That would be participating in Crimes Against Humanity! If someone decides to send this man to Syria he should go straight to hell for participating in Assad's horrifying crimes by handing him one more victim! I think 6200 confirms deaths makes evidence clear that it is NOT A GOOD TIME TO RETURN TO SYRIA!!
let's join assad crimes against humanity and start sending him more people to kill 6200 not enough?? OMG!

TOKYO, Dec 22 (KUNA) -- The Japanese government on Thursday decided to freeze additional assets in Japan held by Syrian individuals and organizations in view of the current international situation surrounding Syria, the Foreign Ministry announced.
The new measures effective Thursday, approved at the Cabinet of Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, include a freeze on the assets of three individuals and six entities who are considered related to Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad. The six organizations include Military Housing Establishment, Real Estate Bank and Scientific Studies and Research Center, according to the ministry. Tokyo has repeatedly urged the Syrian government to immediately cease the use of force against civilians, which has caused many deaths and injuries among the general populace. With Thursday's additional sanctions, Japan freezes the assets of a total of 18 Syrian individuals and 12 entities "in order to contribute to the international efforts for international peace aimed at the resolution of this issue," the ministry said. Syrian troops carry out 'organized massacre' of civilians | Detroit Free Press | freep.com
clip from article: BEIRUT -- As government troops advanced on a village in northwestern Syria on Tuesday, activists said, the terrified residents fled into a valley for fear of being arrested or worse. What happened next, one of the activists said, was "an organized massacre."
The troops surrounded the valley and unleashed a barrage of rockets, shells, bombs and gunfire, according to human rights groups and a witness. At least 110 people were killed in one of the bloodiest days of authoritarian President Bashar Assad's crackdown on a nine-month popular uprising.
The U.S. said it was "deeply disturbed" by the attack, and the Arab League reminded the Assad regime of its responsibilities to protect its civilians.
The United Nations said more than 5,000 people have died since March as Syria has sought to put down the uprising -- part of the Arab Spring of protests that toppled leaders in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.
Members of Syria's opposition said the bloodshed outside the village of Kfar Owaid, about 30 miles from the northern border with Turkey, was evidence of Assad's intent to intensify the crackdown before Arab League observers are expected to arrive in Syria today.
"It was an organized massacre," said Rami Abdul-Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based activist group. "The troops surrounded people, then killed them." [ read more at link]

HRW SYRIA REPORT
Syrian Defectors Tell their Stories
Defectors from the Syrian military and intelligence agencies told their stories in interviews with Human Rights Watch.
Cairo - BİA News Center
16 December 2011, Friday
The 88-page report of Human Rights Watch (HRW), "'By All Means Necessary!': Individual and Command Responsibility for Crimes against Humanity in Syria" is based on more than 60 interviews with defectors from the Syrian military and intelligence agencies. The defectors provided detailed information about their units' participation in attacks, abuses against Syrian citizens, and the orders they received from commanders and officials at various levels, who are named in the report.
"Mansour," a member of Air Force Intelligence in Daraa, said that in April the commander in charge of Air Force Intelligence in Daraa, Colonel Qusay Mihoub, gave his unit orders to "stop the protesters by all possible means," which included the use of lethal force:
"Our orders were to make the demonstrators retreat by all possible means, including by shooting at them. It was a broad order that shooting was allowed. When officers were present, they would decide when and whom to shoot. If somebody carried a microphone or a sign, or if demonstrators refused to retreat, we would shoot. We were ordered to fire directly at protesters many times. We had Kalashnikovs and machine guns, and there were snipers on the roofs".

clip from article: Syria death toll increases to more than 5,000
More than 5,000 people have been killed in nine months of unrest in Syria, the UN human rights chief said, as an insurgency begins to overshadow what had been mostly peaceful protests against President Bashar al-Assad.
6:00AM GMT 13 Dec 2011
The latest figure reported to the UN Security Council by Navi Pillay is 1,000 higher than the one she announced just 10 days ago. The toll includes civilians, army defectors and those executed for refusing to shoot civilians, but not soldiers and other security personnel killed by opposition forces, she said.
