clip from article: Inspecting his machinegun and wrapping ammunition belts around his chest, Samhar braces himself for another night's work.
The scrawny 26-year-old calls his secret route through the mountainous Syrian-Lebanese border "the path of death." But for nearby rebel-held areas in Syria, it is their only lifeline.
Samhar brings desperately needed supplies to neighborhoods in the Syrian city of Homs, about 40 km (25 miles) from the border. They are encircled and under heavy bombardment by Syrian troops trying to snuff out the revolt against President Bashar al-Assad's rule. Activists smuggling in aid are also a target.

When it comes to Syria, the world is too quiet…
clip from article: It has been now almost a year since the uprising began in Syria, more than 7,500 people have died, the crisis is still going on and the world is too quiet on this issue. The decision makers cannot agree over the drafts of resolutions, talks have been held, discussions have been conducted but the result is the same; people are still dying every day.
In the meantime the Syrian regime organized voting on the new constitution. The new document sets a time frame (within three months) for a multi-party parliamentary election, states that the President can hold office only for two terms (7 years each) and ends the rule of the Baath Party. However, the constitution explicitly states the president has to be Muslim, excluding the Christian minority’ s run for the highest position in the state. Some even argue that according to the new constitution the president can override the authority of the parliament, can easily dismiss the prime minister and he could run for office again. More than 13,000 polling stations have been organized for 14.6m voters while the Syrian expatriates living abroad have been prevented from voting. In Hama, Idlib, Daraa and south of Damascus violence did not stop at all.
More than 7,500 people have died in Syria and the government blames "armed gangs" for the unrest saying that more than 2,000 members of the security forces have been killed. Lynn Pascoe, the Under-Secretary-General for political affairs, said there were "credible reports" that the death toll often exceeded 100 civilians per day. But the government’s figures are different. According to them only at 2,493 have been killed while at least 1,345 members of the security forces have died fighting against "armed gangs and terrorists".

The fighting Wednesday was reported in the rebel-held Baba Amr district of Homs. Rights activists said Tuesday the Syrian military sent troops and tanks into the city in apparent preparation for a final assault on Baba Amr.

The panel has compiled a confidential list of top-level Syrian officials who could face prosecution over the atrocities.
Pillay reiterated her call for Syria to be referred to the International Criminal Court "in the face of the unspeakable violations that take place every moment."
"More than at any other time, those committing atrocities in Syria have to understand that the international community will not stand by and watch this carnage and that their decisions and the actions they take today ultimately will not go unpunished," she said.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, testifying in the Senate on Tuesday, said Assad fits the definition of a war criminal, but she stopped short of saying the international community should make that designation and level charges, pointing out that such a step is often a disincentive for leaders to step down.
Syria's U.N. ambassador in Geneva, Fayssal al-Hamwi accused members of the U.N. Human Rights Council of promoting terrorism and prolonging the crisis by organizing the debate on the situation in his country.[read more at link]

WILL YOU HELP THIS LITLE BOY? WILL YOU TRY TO SAVE HIS LIFE? Homs (Bab Sibaa): Feb 27, 2012 - He’s only four years old. He is critically wounded. The result of Assad’s forces targeting him and opening fire. He was walking with his father when they shot him in cold blood.
Listen to his strained breathing. He needs help. He needs medical attention and he cant receive it in Assad’s hospitals since under Assad’s laws any man, woman or child shot or injured by his forces is forbidden to seek treatment, not just at state hospitals, but from anyone in any clinic or private house.
Thanks @ahmed

Honoring Unsung Heroes #BlackHistory
clipped from video description:
Uploaded by whitehouse on Feb 28, 2012
During Black History Month, we pause to salute and reflect on the contributions African Americans have made to the rich fabric that makes up the United States. There are many untold stories that reveal the best of Americans who stepped up when duty called, broke color barriers, or quietly made their communities better one person at a time.
In tribute, President Obama recently invited six special senior citizens to visit the White House to honor as unsung heroes. These unsung heroes are individuals who strengthen their communities through extraordinary everyday acts of service done with reliability and commitment, but who seldom receive recognition.
Among those who visited with President Obama were pioneers in the struggle for racial equality, educators who changed their communities through the classroom, and people who believe that a lifetime serving others is a life well spent.
The honorees were:
Theodore Peters, one of the first African Americans to enter the U.S. Marines and train at Montford Point, NC, after the corps desegregation and a community leader in his South Side Chicago neighborhood.
Gladys Reid, a Cleveland, OH, volunteer who feeds the hungry twice a week and volunteers at local hospitals, often caring for patients who are 20 years her junior.
Velma Lois Jones, the first black classroom teacher elected to serve as president of the Tennessee Education Association and a local leader in the areas of civil rights, politics, community service, and education.
Columbus Preston Holmes, a former class valedictorian, World War II veteran, postmaster, sports commissioner, Selective Service board member, community leader, and active member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Mound Bayou, MS, since joining the church 84 years ago.
James "Alley Pat" Patrick, a member of the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II, radio and television broadcaster, and Atlanta bail bondsman who came to the aid of many jailed activists during the Civil Rights movement, including Martin Luther King Jr.
Marguirette Levere, a church missionary, volunteer, adviser, and role model to her rural Maryland community -- roles she filled while tending to daughter Barbara, who has cerebral palsy and has been severely disabled since her birth 77 years ago. Remarkably, Marguirette doesn't wear glasses or take any medicines at the age of 106.

Conflict of Interest has impaired the judgment of Syrian Ambassador. clip from article: “Anybody who heard the Syrian ambassador should be aware that his comments were borderline out of touch with reality,” Eileen Chamberlain Donahoe, the U.S. representative to the 47-nation council, told reporters.
“I think it’s a reflection to some extent of what’s going on with the Assad regime itself, holding a referendum that is farcical and a mockery of democratic processes when they’re in the midst of a humanitarian crisis of their own creation,” she said. “I think the Syrian ambassador’s comments were equally delusional.”[read more at link]

clip from article: BEIRUT - A Syrian activist group reported Monday that 144 people have been killed across the country, scores of them in the embattled opposition stronghold of Homs by security forces as they tried to flee. A team from the Syrian arm of the Red Cross delivered aid to one of the city's most dangerous neighbourhoods after days of trying to reach the area.
The activist group did not say whether all 144 died on Monday or were killed over the past few days. Many of the casualties were believed to be from the rebel-controlled Baba Amr neighbourhood of Homs, which the Syrian Arab Red Crescent entered late Monday. Also in the neighbourhood are two wounded foreign journalists along with the bodies of two of their colleagues who were killed last week.

The Associated Press: West dismisses Syria constitution vote as 'farce' CLIPPED FROM ARTICLE:
By BEN HUBBARD, Associated Press – 1 hour ago
DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — The U.S. and its allies dismissed the Syrian regime's referendum on a new constitution Sunday as a "farce" meant to justify the bloody crackdown on dissent.
But voters in government strongholds suggested why some Syrians have not joined the uprising against President Bashar Assad: Loyalty, distrust of the opposition and fear his fall will ignite a civil war.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton called the poll "a cynical ploy" and urged Syrians who still support Assad to turn against him. A "farce" and a "sham vote" was how German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle described it.
"It's a phony referendum and it is going to be used by Assad to justify what he's doing to other Syrian citizens," Clinton said in an interview with CBS News in Rabat, Morocco.
"The longer you support the regime's campaign of violence against your brothers and sisters, the more it will stain your honor," she added, addressing Assad supporters, especially the military. "If you refuse, however, to prop up the regime or take part in attacks ... your countrymen and women will hail you as heroes."
While casting his vote at the state broadcasting headquarters, Assad showed no signs of giving in on international demands to end his crackdown. And as he has done in the past, he tried to deflect blame in other directions. He said Syria was under a "media attack." [READ MORE AT LINK]

The duty to expose Syria's slaughter
clip from article: Colvin's last moments were spent in a suburb of Baba Amro, in Homs, living for a brief time among the 28,000 civilians whose lives have been reduced to the daily terror of intense bombardment by Syrian forces, combined with the struggle to get food, water and medical supplies.
For 22 days now, the shells and rockets have fallen. Snipers stationed atop buildings have cut people off from family and friends, making residents' movements along streets or just between houses a frightening race for their lives. The daily death toll is chilling and quickly adds up to at least 100 by the end of each week. There are grave fears the official toll may be much, much higher.
The bloody and harrowing videos shot by brave citizens are the main record of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's slaughter of his people - and the idea that there has been no international intervention as this conflict enters its 12th month remains all but impossible to understand.

ISTANBUL (AP) — As Turkey welcomes Syrians fleeing violence, the anniversary Friday of the deaths of more than 750 Jewish refugees who were denied shelter by Turkey in World War II was a reminder of perennial tension between pragmatic and humanitarian impulses.
The SS Struma, whose passengers fled Romania and docked in Istanbul, was denied entry to Palestinian territory by colonial power Britain. Neighbors desperate as the shelling escalates | Detroit Free Press | freep.com
clip from article: "If they don't die in the shelling, they will die of hunger," activist and resident Omar Shaker said after hours of intense shelling concentrated on the rebel-held neighborhood of Baba Amr. The opposition has extolled that neighborhood as a symbol of its 11-month uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime.
An additional 33 people were killed in northern Syria's mountainous Jabal al-Zawiya region when government forces raided a town in pursuit of regime opponents, activists said.
The Local Coordination Committees, an opposition group, said more than 100 were killed Tuesday, but the report could not immediately be confirmed by others.
Russia, one of Assad's remaining allies, urged the United Nations to send a special envoy to Syria to help coordinate security issues and delivery of humanitarian assistance.
One Homs resident, communicating with the Associated Press by Internet chat, said many people are unable or too scared to go to the hospital for treatment. Some are bleeding to death at home.
"My cousin is a doctor, and he said they've given up on treating serious wounds. The numbers are too many to cope with, especially with so little supplies," said the resident, who has provided reliable information in the past.[read more at link

Demand access be given to the Red Cross to treat wounded civilians who are dying from injuries due to lack of urgently needed medical care. There are no sanitary conditions, there is lack of food and water, children are hiding with families as people around them are murdered and kidnapped everyday, to be brutally tortured, often to death. Humanitarian aid is in order! There must be a line drawn to how much insanity Bashar is permitted to commit as crimes against humanity, systematic murder, torture and rape of what started off as a peaceful demonstration. As the protestors began to be murdered daily world leaders talk about it, but that's all. Turkey is helping refugees, other than that they only have God. They refuse to say Bashar is the only god, and even if they do say it, they are still beaten and tortured to death. At least we can do is provide some humanitarian aid to the victims of genocide, just as it was in 1982, and just like Hitler, and just like the Native Americans were slaughtered. This is 2012, the days of child killing must end. Hopefully the Red Cross will be allowed to treat this child, and others before they die of #BasharCrimes #untreatedinjuries or #Starvation?
