The Marikana Massacre: A Turning Point for South Africa?: Sometimes an event occurs that lifts the veil on a society and exposes its naked reality for all to see. Such was the case on Wednesday, August 16, at Marikana near Rustenberg in the North West Province when heavily armed police opened fire on striking platinum miners, killing 34 workers and injuring 78 others who were on strike.
