Ms Navi Pillay, the UN Human Rights chief, reported the latest figure for Syria’s death toll, which is said to be more than 5,000. Ms. Pillay has referred Syria’s situation to the International Criminal Court, on the grounds of crimes against humanity.

The death toll includes civilians, army defectors, at least 300 children, and thousands of people remaining in detention.

Peaceful protests against the rule of the Assad family have been on the rise since March, have now turned into a wave of bloody killings by government securities in an effort to halt the unrest. Despite the killings, in an effort to show reform processes by Syrian Authorities, elections have taken place, but have been criticised as irrelevant to the voting procedure.
