John Kerry leads Senate Foreign Relations evaluation of Syria options: Democrat John Kerry, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today convened a hearing focused on next steps in Syria, which has descended into near-civil war as the Assad regime attempts to hold onto power. In the prepared text of his opening statement, he said: “We are currently looking at a dangerous and downward spiral in the heart of the Middle East, and one that has the potential ... to threaten the security of key regional friends and partners.”
