TIMELINE – 5th August 2011 20.59 GMT:

In Hama and across Syria President Assad continues his horrendous and abusive use of power. In the view of many (EDITOR: Especially me!) it is time the UN referred him to the International Criminal Court for prosecution for “crimes against humanity”.

Hilary Clinton, US Secretary of State, said in a statement yesterday that their information was that the Assad regime was now responsible for as many as 2,000 deaths.

In the UN on Wednesday a strong presidential statement was issued from the UN Security Council condemning the continuing violence. Even Russia, usually an ally of Syria, approved the statement, though it fell far short of a resolution of condemnation.

Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev also warned Assad that he would “face a sad fate” unless he quickly introduced reforms.

And today, the US added a prominent Syrian business and front man for the regime, Muhammad Hamsho, who has acted both for Assad and his brother Mahir, to their sanctions list.

Some residents with access to satellite phones have said that the city is surrounded with as many as 250 tanks and tanks or armoured vehicles are stationed at every intersection. They also say that bodies have been left uncollected on the streets and some people have taken to burying the dead in their gardens.

Although the pictures are indistinct this video gives some idea of the terrible atmosphere within the city. ... [read more and see video ]
