Syrian strongman Bashar al-Assad thumbed his nose at President Obama, launching massive arrest sweeps and triggering clashes that killed at least 22 protesters yesterday -- a day after the White House demanded he quit.
But thousands of protesters in the southern province of Deraa, where the uprising began in March, defiantly marched and called for a war crimes trial of Assad.
The new bloodshed came despite Assad’s promise this week to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon that military and police operations had stopped.
