Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Wednesday that his country will keep its borders open to Syrians wishing to find refuge in Turkey.

“Turkey will not close its borders in the face of Syrian refugees,” Davutoglu was quoted as saying by the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).

He also said that an ongoing violence in Syria will “escalate the problem of refugees.”

“The only solution to avoid this is to have the Syrian authorities respond to the demands of the people who are calling for reform.”

Thousands of Syrians who fled a brutal crackdown against pro-democracy protestors are staying in camps in southern Turkey.

Violence in Syria has claimed the lives of 1,297 civilians and 340 security force members since anti-regime demonstrations erupted in March, according to rights activists.
