UN Rights Chief to Brief World Body on Syria | Eyewitness News 9

UNITED NATIONS (AP) The U.N. human rights chief has accepted an invitation to brief the General Assembly on Syria on Monday as countries seeking condemnation of the Assad regime's crackdown on civilians move their efforts from the Security Council to the 193-member world body.

Navi Pillay, who has strongly criticized the Syrian government's escalating attacks, was invited by General Assembly President Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser to address a meeting on the latest developments in the 11-month conflict.

Pillay said this week she is "appalled" at the current offensive against the central city of Homs and urged the international community "to cut through the politics and take effective action to protect the Syrian population."

In December, she urged the Security Council to refer allegations of Syrian "crimes against humanity" to the International Criminal Court. [read more at link]
