William Hague: Syrian oil sanctions agreed
September 4, 2011
?No new deals can be agreed on that (oil sales) after today into the European Union and that is 95 percent of their crude oil. I think it’s right to take measures like that to increase the pressure on the Assad regime,? explained Mr Hague.
The Foreign Secretary reiterated that outside intervention in Syria, of the kind seen in Libya, was not being considered but rather a policy of ?increasing the pressure? on Assad’s regime through sanctions would be pursued.
The United States last month imposed a ban on investment in Syria but Mr Hague declined to make clear whether Britain would support extending EU sanctions in this way.
