While the area surrounding the interior ministry's compound was a war zone, downtown Cairo remained largely calm, with business going as usual. Shops were open, cafes were full of people smoking shisha and chatting in politics, football, and random issues. Every now and then, however, small marches would pass by, heading to Mohamed Mahmoud Street.
