France on Thursday urged Syria to respect Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, a statement issued by the French Foreign Ministry said.

“France is extremely concerned about the reports of another incursion of Syrian forces into Lebanese territory, which left two Lebanese people injured,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Bernard Valero said.

“If confirmed, the incursion shows, one more time, the threat which represents the oppressive policy of the Syrian regime against the region’s stability,” he added.

Two Lebanese men were wounded Wednesday when Syrian troops entered Lebanese territory near the village of Khirbat Daoud in Aarsal and opened fire.

Valero also voiced gratitude to Lebanon for hospitalizing and providing refuge for Syrian refugees.

“While the Syrian authorities continue with their bloody repression against the Syrian people who are protesting courageously to be granted the right to freedom and dignity, we thank the Lebanese authorities for deploying every effort to facilitate the hosting and treatment of the Syrian injured, and for respecting the rights of the refugees who seek entering Lebanon’s territory,” he said.

According to UN estimates, around 5,000 people have been killed in the crackdown on Syrian protesters who have been demonstrating against the Baath regime since mid-March.

Thousands of Syrians have fled into Lebanon in recent months, often using illegal border crossings, to escape the unrest gripping their country.
