Syrians mourn slain politician as opposition meets in Cairo - Monsters and Critics

Cairo- Thousands of Syrians expressed criticism on Saturday of the government of President Bashar al-Assad during the funeral of a prominent Kurdish politician assassinated by unknown gunmen.

The angry mourners gathering in Qamishly, the home town of Mashaal Timo in north-eastern Syria, called for al-Assad to step down.

Timo, an outspoken critic of al-Assad's government, was assassinated in Qamishly on Friday. His son was injured in the attack.

Dozens of security force personnel were deployed for the funeral, according to the opposition Local Coordination of the Kurdish Youth. No violence was reported.

The opposition Syrian National Council condemned Timo's killing and an assault on former parliamentarian Riyad Seif, accusing the Syrian government of involvement in retaliatory acts against opponents.

The council, an umbrella coalition of the Syrian opposition, was meeting in Cairo Saturday for 'consultations' with Egyptian and Arab officials, according to a senior member.

'We seek to build on the sympathy shown by the Egyptians towards the Syrian revolution,' the council's spokeswoman Basma Kadmani said
