SYRIA: Some Syrians despair, consider armed confrontation
SYRIA: Some Syrians despair, consider armed confrontation: Syria’s opposition movement is adamant that it will remain nonviolent, saying that peaceful methods hold the best prospect of overthrowing President Bashar Assad’s regime. But the brutality of the crackdown is driving some Syrians to contemplate more extreme methods.

Deadly detention: Deaths in custody amid popular protest in Syria
“These deaths behind bars are reaching massive proportions, and appear to be an extension of the same brutal disdain for life that we are seeing daily on the streets of Syria,” said Neil Sammonds, Amnesty International’s researcher on Syria. “The accounts of torture we have received are horrific. We believe the Syrian government to be systematically persecuting its own people on a vast scale.”

A Statement to the Syrian Opposition -your thoughts please?
(A working draft) A Statement to the Syrian Opposition
We have now entered the sixth month of the Syrian uprising. More than 2500 martyrs have sacrificed their lives, and thousands more continue to endure horrific torture, only so that we might live in freedom and dignity. Activists and protesters continue to defy belief in their bravery and organization, in spite of continuously increasing brutality from the regime. Everything we feared this regime for has materialized.
Compared to the extraordinary work of activists inside Syria, the Syrian opposition has been a near complete disgrace, more than five months after the first chant was raised in protest. By opposition, we are specifically referring to foreign-based activists and intellectuals. It is clear now, except for the dangerously delusional, that organized opposition is not possible at the present inside Syria. (You definitely recall the 40 martyrs killed close the location where an opposition conference was to be held the following day – probably just as warning.)
Organized opposition efforts can only happen outside. Nevertheless, in spite of the liberty of exile, the opposition has failed to present a united front. There are many explanations for this, the most important ones include: long years of government oppression did not permit opposition activity and maturity, alienating streams in the opposition have taken a prominent role, and sensitivity toward any foreign-based activity. None of these excuses are valid any more. If protesters can put their life on the line every day, then surely it can’t be that difficult to unite Syrian activist and intellectuals.
But there is also one essential reason why these opposition conferences have failed, and it is the purpose of this letter: It is because the main figureheads and intellectuals of the Syrian uprising have never spoken in one voice. TV appearances, video messages and beautifully written articles no longer suffice. Much more is needed. And here is what we expect from you:
1- Recognition that a united opposition front is essential at the moment and must be developed through sustained efforts. It cannot be expected to grow organically.
2- Acceptance that a foreign-based opposition is legitimate in the current circumstance.
3- A united front should be unconditional and should expect differing opinions.
4- (PLEASE ADD POINTS HERE)
In conclusion, we would like to present to you a quote from an unlikely source, from a famous regime apologist by the name of Joshua Landis:
Will the Syrian opposition be able to rise to the challenge? That is the question that hovers over every discussion today. Can it resolve its internal squabbles in order to provide sober and disciplined leadership? Can it assume power without prolonging Syria’s agony? The Syrian youth have shown tremendous courage, but the time for wisdom and compromise has arrived.
Thank you.

The rebel victory in Libya will strengthen the resolve of the Syrian democracy protesters and weaken the Baathist dictatorship of Bashar al-Assad.
Last week the increasingly isolated Syrian regime faced UN, US and European calls for Assad to step down.
The UN Human Rights Council has ordered an investigation into violations carried out by the state during the five month-old uprising. The UN accuses the single-party state of killing 2200 civilians and of a shoot-to-kill policy against unarmed volunteers. The friends of the Syrian dictatorship — authoritarian Russia, one-party China and Cuba — attempted to prevent the UN investigation.

Note: A follow-up article will continue the narrative below. Currently, events in Tripoli are fluid.
Progressive Radio News Hour contributor Mahdi Nazemroaya's overnight email said:
"NATO landed insurgents in (Tripoli) harbor. They are attacking my hotel. I almost got shot. They're still lying a lot (about claims of controlling the capital), but we are in real danger."
He's saying that armed guerrilla gangs, mercenaries, indistinguishable from (also armed) Tripoli residents, are waging street warfare.
Russia Today reported about 1,300 deaths. No one knows for sure. However, events are fast-moving and chaotic.
On Russia Today, Nazemroaya also said heavy looting occurred, including insurgents breaking into hotel rooms and ransacking them. In addition, he said NATO WANTS A BLOODBATH.
In fact, they're getting one, exacerbated by intense terror bombing, deliberately targeting civilians.

The team was sent by the United Nations Human Rights Council to investigate what it has called “systematic human rights violations” in the government’s attempt to crush five months of protests challenging President Bashar al-Assad’s grip on power. Geneva: The UN's top human rights body voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday to demand that Syria end its bloody crackdown and cooperate with an international probe into possible crimes against humanity.
The UN Human Rights Council voted 33-4 to condemn the violence by Syrian authorities, strongly underscoring the growing international isolation of President Bashar al-Assad, and dispatch a human rights team to probe alleged atrocities since March.
The countries voting in favour included all four Arab voting members of the council -- Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Russia and China voted against, along with Cuba and Ecuador.
The remaining countries on the 47-nation council abstained or were absent.

Hundreds of demonstrators in Homs, which has had tanks on the streets and snipers on the roofs for weeks, surrounded the UN car in the central New Clock square, shouting for the overthrow of the regime and holding up the signs, according to video footage and local residents.

Syrians say Assad rule will crumble like Gadhafi's | Seattle Times Mobile
clip from article:
On Monday, Syria's state-run news agency said Assad formed a committee to pave the way for the formation of political groups other than his Baath party, which has held a monopoly in Syria for decades.
The opposition rejected Assad's remarks, saying they have lost confidence in his promises of reform while his forces open fire on peaceful protesters.
Thousands of people across several Syrian cities took to the streets after the interview.
In the flash point central city of Homs, a hotbed of dissent against the regime, protesters shouted that Assad will follow Gadhafi, whose whereabouts was unknown as rebels claimed to be in control of Libya's capital.
"Gadhafi is gone, now it's your turn Bashar!" they shouted, witnesses said.
A witness said a few thousand people converged on the main square in Homs known as Clock Square on Monday after they heard that a U.N. humanitarian team was to visit the city.
He said security forces opened fire on the protesters, killing one and wounding several others.
"Simply, without any introductions, they started shooting at them," he said, asking that his name not be used for fear of government reprisals.

This type of protest would never be allowed in Syria," he said. "The government would come with a tank and shoot everyone. They'd arrest people, throw them in jail and torture them.
"I want to be able to visit Syria … I've never even been there. I want to take my children there to see my father's roots."
Protesters handed out flyers to passersby touting a Syrian Revolution. The colour flyer says the Syrian regime has killed 1,500 people and arrested another 20,000. They write that anyone concerned with human rights should protest what is happening in Syria by raising awareness and writing letters to MPs, the United Nations and the Syrian embassy condemning the violence and killings by Assad and his followers.
About 10 Peel Regional Police officers attended the rally, mostly on bike patrol to ensure it remained peaceful. Mississauga Transit Authority also had security officers at the adjacent bus stops.
Passing motorists leaned on their horns in a show of support.
Chanting "we want democracy", and "stop the killing", the large crowds of protesters were brought together by organizer Samer Mohamed, restaurant owner, artist and rookie activities.
The grassroots group meets at his restaurant, Dream Land Restaurant, planning their social media and political campaign.

The Associated Press: Syria hits point of no return amid broad isolation
clip from article:
The United States and several of its major allies called Thursday for Assad to give up power, a crescendo to months of mounting reproach. The messages from Washington, London, Paris, Berlin and Brussels coincided with a U.N. report recommending that Syria be referred to the International Criminal Court for investigation of possible crimes against humanity in the crackdown, including summary executions, torturing prisoners and targeting children.
Even Japan added its voice to the chorus calling for Assad to leave.
Human rights groups said Assad's forces have killed nearly 2,000 people since the uprising erupted in mid-March, touched off by the wave of revolutions sweeping the Arab world.
There is no sign that the global calls for Assad's ouster will have any immediate effect, although analysts say they could ultimately help turn the tide. The growing isolation could compel Syrians who have supported the regime to move toward the opposition, especially if the economy continues to deteriorate. [read more at link]

18+ Syria Soldiers Beat Protesters on Bus - Forced to Chant for Dictator Bashar Assad 8-18-11
18+ Adults Only - Warning - Graphic Images - not for Shock - Documentary Evidence of War Crimes committed by Syria Military Dictatorship against unarmed civilian population. -------------------------------- Actual film date is sometime 1st week of August, 2011 Syria Security Forces (Shabiha militia) and/or Syria Soldiers Beating and Abusing Peaceful Protesters who they took as Prisoners in Hama on a Bus. The video says it was filmed during the "beginning of the invasion of Hama" (the first week of August) and the soldiers are forcing the prisoners to chant for Bashar. The exact chant is "we sacrifice our soul and our blood for bashar" as they are being kicked by the soldier. The prisoners are also forced to chant "Allah Syria Bashar only" (Allah, Souria, Bashar wo Bes) Newly uploaded video filmed by the Soldiers themselves and probably sold for money as self-filming and sale of torture videos are now becoming big business for the syria army. In addition, the Syria Army often videotapes its abuse of protesters and prisoners in order to "teach us a lesson" and to "terrorize us" into shutting up and going home. The Syria Regime actually revels in filming and publicizing their atrocities, and was explicitly criticized by the President of Turkey for doing exactly this, when on June 10, 2011 Erdogan, referring to the destruction and massacres in Jisr Al Shughar stated the following:"Sadly, they don't behave like humans," Erdogan said of the Syrian army's 4th Division, commanded by Maher Assad, according to the report. "Now the barbarity... [soldiers] pose [for a photo] in such an ugly way at the bedside of women who they killed," the Turkish prime minister added, "these images cannot be digested." معتقلين من حماة في الأسبوع الأول لاقتحام المدينه - الأمن باللباس العسكري يضرب المعتقلين بوحشيه

Leading Syrian opposition figures, encouraged by international support for their cause, met in Istanbul on Saturday to nominate a council that could aid in a transition of power if President Bashar al-Assad is toppled by an uprising against his rule.
Unlike previous opposition conferences that were marked by divisions between Islamists and liberals, participants said there was broad agreement on 120 nominees for the council from inside and outside Syria.
The council would speak for dissidents in exile and ac-tivists on the ground, opposition figures told Reuters.
"It will be a credible voice for the democratic revolution," said Wael Merza, a Syrian political scientist who played a major role in preparing the list of nominees.
"We need to have a road map for a transition and unity among the opposition," said Merza, who works in the Gulf.

By The Washington Post
For more than five months, Syrians have been stepping out of their homes and mosques with unfathomable bravery in a quest for freedom and human rights.Bashar al-Assad, the inheritor of a regime that has stifled this Arab country for four decades, has responded by killing thousands of his citizens and torturing and imprisoning many more. Yet, knowing the risks, Syrians refuse to cower.
President Obama and the leaders of Canada, France, Britain and Germany on Thursday called for Mr. Assad to step down. It's damaging that it took Mr. Obama so long to make this call; odd that even now he wouldn't speak the words (the White House issued a written statement and put Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton before the cameras); and unfortunate that two days before he issued the statement, Ms. Clinton said, "It's not going to be any news if the United States says Assad needs to go."

The latest developments are encouraging. On 3 August, the UN Security Council finally managed to agree a statement condemning Syria. The importance of that was less the text and more that China and Russia allowed it to pass without veto. That it took months to even agree that statement is depressing, but in the world of diplomacy it appears even condemning state execution is not straightforward.
Pressure on Assad intensified this week with the UN human rights chief recommending that the Security Council refer Syria to the International Criminal Court (ICC) - a move plainly designed to remind those in Syria that state-sponsored killing will not go unpunished [read more at link]

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad will give an interview to Syrian television today to address recent events in the nation and the government’s reforms, the state-run news agency reported as Assad’s security forces continued a violent crackdown on protesters.
Faced with the most serious threat to his family’s 40-year rule, Assad has deployed tanks, armored vehicles, artillery and helicopters to crush the uprising that began in mid-March after revolts ousted the leaders of Tunisia and Egypt and sparked a conflict in Libya.
Security forces fired on protesters yesterday in the Homs governorate and Daraa, Mahmoud Merhi, head of the Arab Organization for Human Rights, said in a phone interview from Damascus, the capital. At least six people died in clashes in Homs, Ammar Qurabi of the National Organization for Human Rights in Syria said yesterday by phone.
U.S. President Barack Obama, in a coordinated move with U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, issued a statement on Aug. 18 saying Assad should step down and allow Syrians to chart their own political future.

Barack Obama, the US president, along with the rest of the international community is calling for Syria's leader to step down. And the United Nations claims Syria could be guilty of crimes against humanity.
Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, said: "The time has come for him to step aside and leave this transition to the Syrians themselves."
It is a significant ramp-up of international pressure and the first explicit US call for Bashar al-Assad to resign since the uprising in Syria began in March.
The US will not rule out military action, but officials say it is "not a desired course" for the US and its allies, or for the Syrian people.
But how effective will the latest economic sanctions be? Is the situation on the ground really going to change? And is this the beginning of a coordinated action by the UN?
Inside Story, with presenter Hazem Sika, discusses with Rosemary Hollis, a professor of Middle East Policy Studies at City University; Theodore Kattouf, the president of AMIDEAST, which is a US NGO working in international education, training and development in Middle East and North Africa; and Ashraf al-Moqdad, a Syrian opposition member.
