Army defectors 'a cover'
The Syrian government has banned most foreign journalists from entering the country and placed heavy restrictions on local media coverage, making it difficult to independently verify events on the ground.
The UN estimates that about 2,700 people have been killed in a violent government crackdown on pro-reform protests that began mid-March.
The government says that the movement against Assad does not have popular support and blames violence on "armed terrorist groups". It says that more than 700 soldiers and police have been killed in the uprising.
An army defector operating in the province of Idlib, northwest of al-Rastan, told the Reuters news agency that defectors were using guerrilla tactics against the heavily armed loyalist forces.
Activists say up to 1,000 army soldiers deserted to join the protesters in al-Rastan, but that figure is disputed.
"There are at least 100 army defectors in Rastan and 600 gunmen," one activist, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters.
"The defectors are forming a cover for the gunmen so that everybody can say this is the army fighting among itself."
The Damascus-based activist who spoke to Al Jazeera claimed that there were as many as 10,000 members of what he called the "Free Syrian Army" across the country.
Elias Hanna, a retired Lebanese army general and security analyst, told Al Jazeera that it so far appears that the number of desertions is "not really causing a major crack within the Syrian army". [ read more at link ]

"Rastan has been churning out army officers for decades and there is a lot of experience among the defecting soldiers. Assad is mistaken if he thinks that he can wrap up the attack quickly," he said, adding that the agricultural terrain made it difficult for the regular army to seal off the area.
The area around Rastan was a recruiting ground for Sunni conscripts who provide most of the manpower in an army dominated by officers from Assad's minority Alawite sect. Sept. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Syrian security forces killed at least 17 protesters yesterday and the U.S. ambassador’s car was attacked in Damascus today by government supporters.
Ambassador Robert Ford, a critic of President Bashar al- Assad, was stranded in the office of opposition lawyer Hasan Abdul-Azim when government supporters surrounded it, Mahmoud Merhi, head of the Arab Organization for Human Rights, said by phone today. The incident came as the United Nations Security Council prepares to debate a resolution condemning Syrian violence against protesters.
Ford escaped unharmed though his car was damaged after it was pelted with rocks, eggs and sticks, a person familiar with the situation said. The four-wheel-drive vehicle had dents and some of its windows were cracked or shattered, the person said.
Security forces killed protesters yesterday in the central governorate of Homs, the northern province of Idlib and southern area of Daraa, Merhi said.
The protests in Syria are part of the wave of unrest across the Middle East and North Africa that unseated governments in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya. Assad’s crackdown has left more than 3,600 civilians dead since the unrest began in March, according to Ammar Qurabi of the National Organization for Human Rights in Syria. About 30,000 people have been detained and 13,000 are still being held, according to Qurabi and Merhi.

Al Arabiya television broadcast video today of army defectors saying they had attacked and killed agents of the government and freed 27 children and their teacher. Video shot in Sanabis village near Manama, Bahrain on September 23, 2011 shows police leaving a home after chasing protesters inside and setting fire to it by throwing sound grenades near an opened cooking gas container according to eyewitnesses in the home. The protesters tried to escape through a garage when police officers outside tried to trap them in. Once the protesters managed to get out of the garage police fired rubber bullets at them from a close range and beat one of the youth on the street. At least seven of the protesters are being treated for third degree burns caused by the fire.
Later, when people from Sanabis were fighting to put out the flames, riot police again attacked them.

The Syrians have now endured six months of unrest and violent suppression of mostly peaceful protests. As they now look towards the next six months with a mixture of uncertainty, fear and hope, I wanted to share some personal impressions about what’s happening. Some thoughts about why it’s happening. And maybe to spark some debate about what comes next and what can be done.
In doing so I am privileged. Because I can. The last six months have shown the Syrians can too. But in doing so, they face censorship, threats and arbitrary arrest.
The Syrian regime doesn’t want you to know that its security forces and the gangs that support them are killing, arresting and abusing mostly peaceful protesters: The UN says over 2,700 people have died in the last six months, some of them under torture in prison. It doesn’t want you to know that it is preventing many from meeting peacefully to discuss reform. It wants you to hear only one version of the truth – its own. And to see only one way out – the return to authoritarian rule where fear surpasses a desire for freedom. This is a regime that remains determined to control every significant aspect of political life in Syria. It is used to power. And it will do anything to keep it.
People say that in today’s world it’s no longer possible to hide the truth. A lot’s been said about the power of Twitter and Facebook, the inability for information to be censored in Tunisia and Egypt. The cruel reality in Syria is that they are doing all they can to pull the shutters down.

According to World Tribune online, the administration of President Barack Obama has been quietly consulting with the Islamic opposition in Syria.
Senior US officials have been meeting with the Muslim Brotherhood as well as its lobbyists in the United States. They said the two sides have convened several times over the last three months to discuss the Brotherhood's role after the ouster of President Bashar Assad.
"We ask the US and international community to put an end to bloodshed and send Bashar Assad to the International Criminal Court," Susan Misto, a board member of the Syrian American Council, said.
The Reform Party in Syria has protested the administration's meetings with the Brotherhood. RPS, regarded as one of the most pro-Western elements in the Syrian opposition, said Washington was signaling its endorsement of the Brotherhood's goal to make Syria into an Islamic state rather than a democracy that would foster its large minority community of Alawites, Christians and Kurds.
"This ill-advised policy of the US State Department will have dire consequences, not only for the future of Syria, but also through an immediate increase in violence and the strengthening of the Assad base," RPS said on Sept. 23.
On Sept. 24, the council, regarded as a lobbyist for the Brotherhood, held a meeting in Anaheim, Calif. to discuss a post-Assad Syria. The session was addressed by US special envoy Frederic Hof, responsible for US policy on Damascus.

The Daily Telegraph has witnessed devastating scenes from the key city of Al Rastan – a city which bridges the country’s north-south divide – in which tanks and other heavy weapons are being used against schools and homes.
Armed opposition groups have taken to building barricades against the onslaught. And according to residents many parts of Al Rastan have become no-go zones with skirmishes and military raids a daily occurrence.
The much feared 'shabiha’ – pro-Assad militias- storm houses, hunting defected soldiers and arresting suspected dissidents as they go – 'looking for reasons to kill’ one resident said. Government snipers sit atop local security headquarters during the day, picking off those who venture too close, whilst at night more random shootings follow.
All public services in Rastan have been cut – including the vitally important schools. With nowhere to go during the day, children have in some cases become helpless targets.
One father wept as he recounted how a bullet meant for him had passed through his shoulder and into the head of his five-year-old son.

The focus of the international media may have switched from Syria to Israel-Palestine (for now), but that won't stop the Los Angeles chapter of the Syrian American Council from holding its third town hall meeting in Anaheim Saturday to examine the current situation and future outlook for members' homeland. Speakers include Frederic C. Hof, special coordinator for regional affairs at the Office of the Special Envoy for Middle East Peace and the U.S. State Department, and Dr. Najib Ghadban, a member of the newly formed Syrian National Council and a professor of political science at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville.
The program is scheduled to include presentations, a question-and-answer session and an overview of the nonprofit SAC-LA's projects for the local Syrian American community.
"As Syrian Americans we stand in solidarity with the peaceful protestors in Syria who are giving their lives daily in the pursuit of freedom and liberty," says SAC-LA board member Susan Misto in the event announcement. "We ask the U.S. and international community to put an end to bloodshed and send Bashar Assad to the International Criminal Court."
The event, which is ndorsed by the Syrian Emergency Task Force-Los Angeles and the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Greater Los Angeles Area, is scheduled to run from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Anaheim Hilton, 777 West Convention Way.

Bashir al-Assad's forces have been more restrained. 2011's digital communications provide real-time pictures of murder. NATO's Libyan intervention reminds Assad that he could also face overt international action if he threatens mass reprisals. So his regime, supported by Iranian intelligence and special forces, has fought a slow war of repression, a cruel endurance contest with its own people, killing some 2,700 civilians since the rebellion erupted in February.
The regime, however, is faltering. The mosaic contains too many enemies. Iran has noticed. Earlier this month, Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told Assad to end his violent crackdown.
Iran wants to buy time, hoping Assad and his killers will endure. This would be an optimal outcome for Iran's Islamic revolutionaries. Assad's Syria provides Iran with a forward base in its proxy war against Israel, supporting Hezbollah and other terrorist organizations.
The Assad dictatorship, however, is no longer acceptable to NATO. U.S. President Barack Obama made that clear last month when he said, "For the sake of the Syrian people, the time has come for President (Bashir) Assad to step aside."
Iran could live with an Assad replacement who would continue to support its proxies. Exiling Assad might make room for an alternative Alawite dictator, a man with a different face, but there is no guaranty that a new Alawite face will halt the rebellion. The Libyan rebels ouster of dictator Muammar Gadhafi has encouraged Syrians. Bashir al-Assad's forces have been more restrained. 2011's digital communications provide real-time pictures of murder. NATO's Libyan intervention reminds Assad that he could also face overt international action if he threatens mass reprisals. So his regime, supported by Iranian intelligence and special forces, has fought a slow war of repression, a cruel endurance contest with its own people, killing some 2,700 civilians since the rebellion erupted in February.
The regime, however, is faltering. The mosaic contains too many enemies. Iran has noticed. Earlier this month, Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told Assad to end his violent crackdown.
Iran wants to buy time, hoping Assad and his killers will endure. This would be an optimal outcome for Iran's Islamic revolutionaries. Assad's Syria provides Iran with a forward base in its proxy war against Israel, supporting Hezbollah and other terrorist organizations.
The Assad dictatorship, however, is no longer acceptable to NATO. U.S. President Barack Obama made that clear last month when he said, "For the sake of the Syrian people, the time has come for President (Bashir) Assad to step aside."
Iran could live with an Assad replacement who would continue to support its proxies. Exiling Assad might make room for an alternative Alawite dictator, a man with a different face, but there is no guaranty that a new Alawite face will halt the rebellion. The Libyan rebels ouster of dictator Muammar Gadhafi has encouraged Syrians. For that matter, it has encouraged Iranian dissidents — which is another reason Tehran's dictators want the Assad regime to prevail.

This Friday was one of the most important during the course of the protest movement in Syria. For weeks, the security forces and the military, through their operations, have prevented mass demonstrations. However, in a remarkable step and due to increasing international support for the protest movement and the subsequent morale boost, many protesters have managed to overcome the security and military barriers and begin taking the steps necessary to de-legitimize the government. Despite the Syrian president's promises to withdraw his troops and end military operations across the country, armored vehicles and tanks have continued to be stationed in city centers. In fact, security backups have been called to quell protests such as the one that occurred in Hirak and Ankhal in the Daraa Governorate, where they have resumed gunfire using both light and heavy machine guns. Today alone, security forces killed at least 22 protesters, including children who were not part of the demonstrations.
In the besieged city of Homs, all neighborhoods, including Khaldieh, Bab Sbaa, and Baba Amr demonstrated in thousands, despite gunfire yesterday and today, and despite the violent military operations in the city for the past week, which take lives on a daily basis. Deir Ezzor is in the same condition, but demonstrations approached large numbers before the military invasion.
In Idlib and its suburbs, where army vehicles have been deployed for two months, and in Hama, which has been surrounded for 20 days, people have suffered the worst forms of punishment for the largest demonstrations in Syria. Residents of Hama resumed their demonstrations outside prisons in various neighborhoods and in the city, also to be fired upon by the security forces.
In Lattakia, where the Raml neighborhood witnessed the last episode of ongoing tragedies in the country, supporters demonstrated in other neighborhoods in the city and in Jableh in defiance of the heavy presence of Shabiha (regime's armed thugs). These two cities have been the base of these thugs to terrorize the population and serve as the protectors of the Assad family.
However, confrontations in the town of Daraa, where the first military operations were conducted at the start of the Revolution, have been the most severe. Security forces continue to fire at demonstrators in Ghabagheb and Al-Hirak, which are just a few kilometers away from the border of the Occupied Golan. Among the casualties were an elderly man, two children, and twelve protesters, not to mention dozens of wounded.
In different cities such as Jableh, Hasakeh, and Qamishly, where assembly is difficult and there is great fear of the Shabbiha, demonstrators are calling for the toppling of the regime and the prosecution of Bashar al-Assad, despite threats by government officials and the governor that the city of Jableh would come under attack if protests continue.
The grip of the security forces has not lessened on the Damascus suburbs. In Douma, tens of thousands of protesters marching throughout the town came under fire. At least one person was reported killed in Harasta, and another in Rahiba. In other parts of the capital, security forces are dispersing thousands of protesters with clubs and electric batons, as well as arrest campaigns.

The report, distributed Tuesday by Syria's SANA news agency, called the camps "centers of isolation full of rape and torture." A woman cited in the report said she'd been raped repeatedly there and that 70 Syrian girls also had been raped.
The camps house more than 7,500 Syrians who fled the violent crackdown on dissent by the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, called the report part of a "black propaganda" campaign that Syria is now waging against Turkey. He described developments in his country's relations with Syria as "very, very ugly."
Erdogan once was considered a close Assad ally, but he's distanced himself from the Syrian president in recent weeks after Assad rebuffed Turkish calls to end the crackdown on protests, which human rights groups estimate has killed more than 2,000 people since March.
Erdogan said he no longer talked to Asssad, though the countries still have diplomatic relations.
"I myself have cut my contacts with the Syrian goverment," he said Tuesday in New York. "We would never like to come to this point, but unfortunately the Syrian goverment has made us to come to a point where we had to take this kind of decision. We don't have any trust left for the current Syrian government."
Erdogan has been pressing ahead with a diplomatic offensive intended to project Turkey as a leader in the Middle East. Last week, he visited Cairo, where he won accolades for his recent break with Israel over Israel's refusal to apologize for the killings of nine Turks aboard a Gaza-bound boat that Israeli special forces intercepted in May 2010.
Turkish authorities said the Syrian report on the conditions in the camps in Turkey's Hatay district, on the Syrian border, appeared to be retaliation for their country's increasingly hostile position toward Assad's government.
The official Syrian report quoted a woman, identified only as Fatima, who the report said had returned recently to the village of Jisr al Shughour in Syria, which had been the subject of a crackdown by Syrian soldiers in June.
The woman said political dissidents from Jisr al Shughour had raped her in the camp and that they threatened to rape her daughters if she tried to return to Syria. She said a Turkish soldier also had raped her and that as many as 70 Syrian girls had been raped in the camps.

As violence began to spread across Syria in June, Mr. Maliki received a delegation of visiting Syrian businesspeople and government officials, including the foreign minister, to discuss closer economic ties between the two countries. NEW YORK — The U.S. and Russia are disagreeing on how to respond to the situation in Syria, where the Obama administration wants a strong U.N. condemnation of Bashar Assad's regime and the Kremlin is seeking continued dialogue.
U.S. officials said Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton presented the U.S. case in a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Monday in New York. They said she told Lavrov that the U.N. Security Council must speak out against the Assad regime's "inexcusable violence."
But the officials said Lavrov presented a counterview, calling for dialogue between Assad and the opposition.
The Obama administration already has given up on Assad's pledges of reform and has called for the Syrian leader to step aside.

NEW YORK — The U.S. and Russia are disagreeing on how to respond to the situation in Syria, where the Obama administration wants a strong U.N. condemnation of Bashar Assad's regime and the Kremlin is seeking continued dialogue.
U.S. officials said Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton presented the U.S. case in a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Monday in New York. They said she told Lavrov that the U.N. Security Council must speak out against the Assad regime's "inexcusable violence."
But the officials said Lavrov presented a counterview, calling for dialogue between Assad and the opposition.
The Obama administration already has given up on Assad's pledges of reform and has called for the Syrian leader to step aside.
The officials spoke about the private meeting on condition of anonymity.

Syrians living in Romania held a demonstration in Bucharest on September 16th in support of the uprising of their countrymen in Syria and condemning Bashar Assad’s ruthless killings against the Syrian people. The demonstrators called for the overthrow of Assad’s rule, asking for the international community’s intervention and the establishment of democracy in Syria. The demonstrators also demanded the Iranian regime and Hezbollah to stop their meddling in Syria, and condemned Russia and China’s support of Bashar Assad’s regime.
The demonstrators held pictures of Bashar Assad, Kadhafi and Khamenei with the following writing: “Yesterday Kadhafi, today Assad, tomorrow Khamenei.”

After forming a council representing a united front in opposition to President Bashar al-Assad, more than 200 Syrian opposition figures on Saturday 17 September 2011 met near Damascus in an effort to unite anti-government groups.
The meeting, held at a private farm outside the capital, follows months of protests against the rule of President Bashar al-Assad.
Saturday's meeting comes as media reports increased Friday’s death toll resulting from Syrian forces crackdown on protesters to 14. Early reports claimed that Assad forces shot dead 12 people on Friday and deployed heavily across rural areas around Damascus.
It also comes two days after some 140 figures, including exiled opponents and 70 dissidents inside Syria, were chosen as members of the new "Syrian National Council", concluding a four-day meeting in the Turkish city of Istanbul.
The council aims to help topple Assad within six months and form an interim government thereafter, Basma Kadmani, a Syrian exile living in France, said at a news conference.
"The political vision of the council will give a push to the escalation of the revolutionary work we are seeing," Kadmani said. "This group, based on previous initiatives, and on what the street is demanding, is calling for the downfall of the regime with all of its limbs."
While not ruling out foreign military intervention in Syria as more protesters call for international protection, Kadmani said the focus for now was on stepping up diplomatic and economic pressure on Assad.
Saturday’s Meeting
The opposition meeting, however, coincided with another conclave organised by Syrian government as the official news agency (SANA) said that national dialogue sessions in various cities and universities continue on Saturday. It claimed that the sessions witnessed a broad participation of political, economic, social, and independent and opposition figures to reach joint national formulas that enhance democracy and political pluralism and meet the aspirations of citizens.
A participant in the meeting told Al Jazeera that "about three hundred participants from all Syria's opposition groups and figures are participating in the two-day meeting. There are participants from Kurdish parties and young activists from the LCC also taking part.
“We will try to elect an executive council, about 60 members, and this council will elect an executive bureau. Tomorrow, there will be a press conference in Damascus city by the Commission’s coordinator Hassan Abdul Azim. This meeting will draw the future of the opposition movement."

Local Coordination Committees in Syria (LCC) have said that the Syrian authorities should stop harassing the family of the martyr Ghiath Matar, and stop threatening his family members. The family of Ghiath woke up today to find the walls of their home filled with sentences saying “Down with the Matar family for hosting the American Ambassador”, in reference to the visit of 5 western ambassadors to the wake of martyr Matar where they expressed their condolences to the family of the martyr.
The LCC have said: “There is a history to harassing the family of the martyr Matar which dates back to before he was killed. His brother Anas Matar was detained for almost two months and was not release until Ghiath was killed. His other brother, Hazem, his father, and one of his relatives were also detained and then released later. However, harassment continued until Ghiath was martyred where some officers in airforce intelligence, the security service division who arrested the martyr Matar and who are responsible for his death under torture, called the family of Ghiath and threatened them until they told them that their son is detained and that they will return him dead. Airforce intelligence forces attacked the funeral of Martyr Ghiath Matar and opened fire on mourners, killing young man Ahmad Ayrout. The next day, agents from security services and airforce intelligence went to the wake of Ayrout, and claimed that they were there for paying respects. Then Addounia TV station (which accompanied the agents to the wake) asked the family of Ayrout to claim that Ghiath Matar was the one who killed Ahmad. The family of Ayrout refused and they pointed to the killed who was with security agents in the wake”
